Final Oscar Predictions 2015

Oscar nomination morning was quite a disappointment for me.  Carol was ignored, and The Big Short somehow was super popular.  Now, all the disappointment is gathering together to be a generally forgetful winners list following a particularly strong year in film.

My Final Predictions:

Best Picture:

Will win: The Revenant

It won the Globe.  It won BAFTA.  He won last year, and it’s made times more than any of his previous films.  I feel it’s going to be another year of Inarritu.

Might win: The Big Short

My choice: Spotlight

Best Director:

Will win: Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu – The Revenant

With his big wins last year, Inarritu is pegged to get another award.  DGA, Globe, BAFTA.  He has the biggest event, and he was showing off.  All the money means something.

Might win: George Miller – Mad Max: Fury Road

My choice: George Miller – Mad Max: Fury Road

Best Actor:

Will win: Leonardo DiCario – The Revenant

DiCaprio is foaming at the mouth to get his Oscar.  Nomination after nomination had failed, and now he has all the precursors backing him up

Might win: Michael Fassbender – Steve Jobs

My choice: Michael Fassbender – Steve Jobs

Best Actress:

Will win: Brie Larson – Room

Brie is very popular, as can be witnessed by all her awards.  Not a ton of people saw this one, but no one else has the backing power.  Very strong year for actressing, and she did a great job.

Might win: Saorsie Ronan – Brooklyn

My choice: Rooney Mara – Carol….I mean, Charlotte Rampling – 45 Years…

Best Supporting Actor:

Will win: Sylvester Stallone – Creed

Stallone first played Rocky 39 years ago, and while that film won Best Picture and Director, he missed for both screenplay and actor.  Coming back with a sentimental but ultimately strong performance.  Though Rylance and Ruffalo have a chance to steal, it feels that Stallone has the most backing.  If only, MBJ were nominated as well

Might win: Mark Rylance – Bridge of Spies

My choice: Sylvester Stallone – Creed

Best Supporting Actress:

Will win: Alicia Vikander – The Danish Girl

Ms Vikander has been all over the place this year.  This performance was not her best, but certainly the strongest of the movie.  Wish this was a nomination for Ex Machina, but of course, disappointments all around.  This is the biggest toss up with Winslet and maybe even Mara able to sneak in.

Might win: Kate Winslet – Steve Jobs

My choice: Rooney Mara – Carol

Best Original Screenplay:

Will win: Spotlight

Despite it losing ground in the Best Picture and Director races (very sadly, this is still my #2 for the year), its script held the most intense nonviolence in years.  McCarthy, commonly a novelist, produced some fantastic flow here.

Might win: Inside Out

My choice: Spotlight

Best Adapted Screenplay:

Will win: The Big Short

This movie came out of nowhere to become a front runner for the big prizes.  Star power does terrible things.  McKay and crew have a lot of practice, and where I’m terribly disappointed in the reception for this uneven movie, its script is the highlight.
