The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019): Movie Review

I keep forgetting that I went to go see The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part; unfortunate as I just saw it yesterday, shortly after watching the original: a funny, original animated comedy that they followed up with a funny but repetitive story of abandoning selfishness and valuing complicated relationships.  Tiffany Haddish is a nice touch, and some of the jokes did makes me laugh; but their strategy of being meta about how self-aware they were last time was too central in their plot to fill 105 minutes of entertainment and it sorta drug on with a scatter funny tidbits in a predictable story.

Their “Everything is Awesome” stand-in fails its intention of being a “Catchy Song.” Though “Not Evil” is a goofy character introduction that highlights Haddish’s best-in-show shapeshifter, and the credits song from The Lonely Island is a delightful send-off (Also, please look for what I think is a Trump/Hillary or Pelosi holding hands in the let’s all get along wrap-up portion of the credits).  Overall, just lackluster for a rehashing of a surprise-they-managed-it successful animation feat. Focusing more on the previous success and its star’s rise to blockbuster fame (that is far from invulnerable) didn’t quite cut it, but it makes for a quaint laugh in the middle of an tiring week. And I gotta say, I do love the raptors.
